Taffs Well Metro Depot – Enabling the Next Generation of Welsh Transport
As part of the ambitious £100 million redevelopment of Wales’ rail infrastructure, Elemy was selected to supply elevated walkways and stair structures for the newly constructed Taffs Well metro depot and control centre.
The project was a cornerstone of the South Wales Metro initiative, which introduced a new fleet of tram-trains to the region.
Elemy’s scope included three 35-metre twin walkways, integrated handrails, staircases, safety gates, and boxing ring gates, all fabricated in GRP to ensure lightness, longevity, and safety. GRP’s RF transparency and non-conductive properties were vital in this electrically intensive environment, while its anti-slip surface provided safety for maintenance staff working at height.
The project required a fully engineered design package, complete with 3D modelling and structural calculations.
Working in close collaboration with the principal contractor, Elemy delivered on time and to spec, helping to future-proof the depot’s maintenance access routes for decades to come. This installation stands as a testament to GRP’s versatility in modern rail projects and Elemy’s expertise in delivering large-scale infrastructure solutions.
