Schofield Street Footbridge

Elemy have recently completed work on the new Schofield Street Footbridge, supplying GRP bridge decking, mesh panels and all associated clips and fixings.

Our client was asked to install the new footbridge, which spans the East Lancashire railway line, for Rochdale Borough Council. The existing bridge had been erected in 1974 and therefore it had become dilapidated and unsafe.

We provided our client with the GRP gritted top deck plate used as the walkway surface. GRP decking is ideal for use in busy pedestrian areas due to its hardwearing and anti-slip surface which provides a safe surface to walk on. The GRP anti-slip decking is available in many colours. This means the product can mirror that of traditional materials such as concrete, timber, or steel, whilst providing a more lightweight and easier to install solution. For this project, dark grey GRP decking was used to blend in with the adjoining tarmac pathways. Additionally, GRP has a long life span and requires little to no maintenance. This made it the perfect solution for this project, as with the rail line underneath, continual maintenance would cause severe disruption.

Furthermore, we supplied 54 mesh panels which were used either side of the footbridge. These were hot dip galvanised to provide a corrosion resistant finish, then powder coated Holly Green to match the client’s specification. Mesh panels are essential in ensuring the safety of all pedestrians using the bridge and are often a necessary health and safety requirement on many projects. Elemy are able to supply a range of mesh panels, including steel perforated mesh or a GRP alternative. To find out more about GRP Bridges, click here.
